Adventure Activities

Join Outdoor Pursuits staff on an outdoor adventure! No experience necessary. Any fees cover your guide, transportation and equipment.

Hug-A-Horse

  • Noon – 1:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23
  • Unity Stables, FREE

Did you know you can earn course credit learning how to ride a horse? You can through Outdoor Pursuits! Meet some of your potential equine classmates with a short trip to Unity Stables. The horses are sweet and gentle, and if you’re lucky, one might eat a peppermint out of your palm. Transportation is provided.

Hidden Glen & Stream Hike

  • 2:45 – 5 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28
  • Local, $5

Nestled in a hidden glen not far from campus is a forest oasis. Winding trails lead to a picturesque gorge with towering Hemlocks and a gently falling stream. Bring your sense of adventure, water bottle and sturdy shoes for a refreshing hike. Meet in front of the East Gym.

River Trails Bike Ride

  • 2:45 – 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4
  • Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ, $5

Join us for a ride along the newly opened Twin Rivers Greenway and the historic Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ River Trail, following the Chenango River. We’ll guide you on bike routes that connect downtown and campus. If you'd like, bring some cash for a frozen yogurt stop on the way back. Need a bike? BOP bikes are available for the ride. Meet outside the BOP office.

Seeking Sasquatch Hike

  • 10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8
  • Finger Lakes Trail, $10

We’re heading into a dense forest with towering trees that keep it shady, even during the day. We’ll follow a scenic stream valley, climb up to an old road, and continue through another thick forest. You might hear snapping twigs, catch glimpses of distant movement, or spot mysterious shapes. Could it be Sasquatch? Join us on this 5-mile trek to find out. Pack a lunch, trail snacks and a water bottle. Sturdy shoes or hiking boots are recommended. Meet the BOP van in front of the East Gym at 9:50 a.m.

Evening Lake Loop Hike

  • 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13
  • Chenango Valley State Park, $10

This will be an easy social hike along the forested lake side trails of our closest state park. It’s a great way to meet other outdoorsy friends and enjoy a late afternoon hike. Wear sturdy hiking boots or shoes, bring water in a small day pack or book bag. Dress for the weather. Meet in front of the East Gym at 3:15 p.m.

Bike & Hike Watkins Glen Gorge

  • 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22
  • Watkins Glen, $20 with a BOP bike; $15 with your bike

A scenic canal towpath and old railroad bed that has been transformed into a bicycling path provides us with a flat ride (approximately 12 miles) and passes the cascading waters of Montour Falls. We will take a break to hike the gorge of Watkins Glen State Park and enjoy even more falling water. This trip makes for a great day of adventure away from campus. Pack a hearty lunch, snacks and a water bottle for sure. Helmets are a must. Bring $$ for one of the best ice cream stops ever.

Foliage & Fire Tower Hike

  • 8:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29
  • Balsam Lake Mountain, $20

Balsam Lake Mountain at 3723 feet stands taller than anything as far as the eye can see. The fragrance of balsam fir trees on this summit only serve to add to this high mountain experience. The start of the autumn colors make for incredible photos from the fire tower on the summit. Sturdy hiking boots or shoes are very important. Bring a small pack with lunch, snacks, and plenty of water (1 liter) for the day. Essential clothing for the weather is a must (rain coat and synthetic clothing for warmth). This is a challenging hike. Meet the BOP van in front of the East Gym at 8:15 a.m. SHARP!

3 Gorges Waterfall Hike

  • 9:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11
  • Ithaca, $10

Lace up your hiking boots for a grand slam of three of our Finger Lakes gorges! First up is Taughannock Falls gorge where you will stand in the mist of the second highest falls in NYS, then Buttermilk Falls with an awesome gorge full of natural curiosities, and finally Robert H. Treman State Park featuring 115 foot Lucifer Falls. Wear sturdy hiking shoes, bring a small pack with a 1 liter water bottle, lunch and snacks. There is NOT a stop for lunch, please pack accordingly. Dress for the weather.

Giant Trees & Waterfalls Hike

  • 12:30 – 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12
  • Salt Springs State Park, $10

In neighboring Pennsylvania is a unique state park! Three waterfalls and pioneer tales shroud this stand of virgin eastern hemlocks. Come hike along the cool forest stream and beneath these magnificent trees! Wear shoes that can wet, bring a backpack with a water bottle and snacks.

Cider & Doughnuts Hike

  • 1:45 – 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18
  • Greenwood County Park, $10

Get out and enjoy the change of the season. This will be an easy hike along the rolling trails of one of the Broome County parks. Look forward to the canopy of the autumn trees. Pack snacks and a water bottle. Dress for the weather. We will stop at a local cider press operation after the hike for fresh pressed apple cider, homemade doughnuts, a caramel apple, pie and other goodies! Bring $$. This is a social hike. Meet the BOP van in front of the East Gym at 1:45 p.m.

Lucifer Falls Hike

  • 9:30 a.m. – 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27
  • Treman State Park, $10

Explore one of the many spectacular gorges of central New York! This 6 mile hike takes you past beautiful cascades, towering cliffs and along the awesome 115’ Lucifer Falls in Treman State Park. This is a moderate hike. Bring plenty of water, lunch, snacks, and a camera. Dress for the weather and wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots.

Catskill Fire Tower Hike

  • 8:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2
  • Hunter Mountain, $20

Ready to challenge yourself? Join us for a moderately strenuous hike to the summit of Hunter Mountain (elev. 4040') in the northeast Catskills. Our hard climb will be rewarded with many spectacular views. Even more incredible vistas await those who venture up the renovated fire tower. Sturdy hiking boots or shoes are very important. Bring along a small pack with a bomber lunch, great snacks, and plenty of water (1 liter) for the day. Essential clothing for the weather is a must (rain coat and synthetic clothing for warmth). Bring extra money for a food stop on the return to Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ. This is a challenging hike, but we leave no one behind! Meet the BOP van in front of the East Gym at 8:15 a.m. SHARP!
