鈥媁hen Margaret Decker is at the top of the hill, astride her bike and poised to burst away from the starting gate, she isn鈥檛 thinking about how fast she鈥檒l ride or how tight she can take the turns.

鈥淲hat I enjoy is looking at the dirt,鈥 she says, laughing. 鈥淭here is nothing better than riding around your track and realizing this is pristine dirt, with smooth corners and nice berms.鈥

Perfect for making your mark, which is what Decker and her family are doing in the sport of BMX.

Decker is a clinical assistant professor and doctoral student in the Decker School of Nursing. Her husband, Rick, is a 香港六合彩资料 firefighter and EMT. When one son began riding BMX in 2009, it wasn鈥檛 long before both parents and all four children were riding and racing. The Deckers now own RevolutionS BMX LLC, manage a team and are operating Champion Speedway BMX track in Owego, N.Y.

One heat 鈥 or moto 鈥 can involve up to eight riders navigating the course. 鈥淭here鈥檚 a starting gate and starting hill, and some bumps and berms and turns,鈥 Decker says. Racing the entire course takes about 45 seconds. As a coach, Decker focuses on helping riders develop confidence. 鈥淭hey鈥檙e going over a jump or a hill, and they back off because they鈥檙e afraid they鈥檙e going to hit their bars or be cut off in a corner. We simulate the scenarios. We also do a lot of time drills to help them get faster.鈥

Coaching is sometimes a two-way street.

鈥淎fter we鈥檙e done with a clinic or a coaching session, they鈥檒l say, 鈥楳rs. Decker, get your bike, you haven鈥檛 ridden yet.鈥 And I鈥檒l get up on the gate and they鈥檒l ask, 鈥楢re you fast?鈥欌 Decker says.

鈥淭hey鈥檒l beat me, but then they鈥檒l come back around and say, 鈥楥鈥檓on, we鈥檒l ride with you.鈥

鈥淚t鈥檚 the neatest thing.鈥
