The State University of New York's 64 geographically dispersed campuses bring educational opportunities within commuting distance of virtually all New Yorkers and comprise the nation's largest comprehensive system of public higher education. The 64 SUNY campuses are divided into four categories based on educational mission, the kinds of academic opportunities available and degrees offered. They are Research and University Centers, Comprehensive Colleges, Technology Colleges and Community Colleges.
The Board of Trustees is the governing body of the State University of New York. It consists of 18 members, 15 of whom are appointed by the governor, by and with consent of the New York State Senate. In addition, the president of the Student Assembly serves as a student trustee and the president of the University Faculty Senate serves as an ex-officio trustee.
