Biological Sciences

4+1 BA - MS Program in Biology

Students may apply for a 4+1 degree program leading to the BA in biological sciences together with an MS graduate degree, as described below. The requirements for the BA portion of these 4+1 programs are the same as the requirements listed in the undergraduate section. However, in their senior year, a 4+1 student may take up to eight graduate credits of graduate coursework that will also count toward the undergraduate degree. The nature of those eight credits is to be determined between a student and their faculty research advisor.

The program is designed for exceptional Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ students who want to complete a bachelor’s and a research-based master’s degree in five years. Students in the program receive a bachelor’s degree (BA) and a master’s degree (MS) at the end of the program. The requirements for completion of the 4+1 degree program are identical to those for completion of the two separate degrees. But because eight hours of coursework taken for the MS degree (500-600 level) also count for the undergraduate degree, students can complete the course requirements for the bachelor’s in four years and the course requirements for the master's degree in one year beyond the bachelor's degree. By completing the bachelor’s requirements during the first four years, students are assured of the bachelor’s degree if, for any reason, they do not complete the fifth year. The MS degree portion of the 4+1 is research intensive, so potential applicants should seek advice and a potential research mentor from among the faculty members in the Biological Sciences Department.

Undergraduate credits: 126. Double-counted credits: Eight. Graduate credits: 30.

The program is appropriate for students who want to:

  • Increase their preparation for medical school. An additional year of research and coursework can strengthen academic training and credentials while allowing exploration of other career options.
  • Determine whether they want to pursue a PhD. An additional year of research and coursework will help ascertain whether a PhD research career is desired.
  • Prepare for a career in industry. Employers are looking for people who have excellent training in science and teamwork and communication skills, which an extra year in a research environment can provide.
  • Prepare for a career in teaching. Science teachers are in high demand, but master’s degrees are often expected within a few years of employment (e.g., 3-5 years in New York). A master’s degree also can lead to administrative positions in schools and educational organizations.

Steps for Entrance into the 4+1 Degree Program

To apply for this program, in one's junior year, applicants will need to have successfully completed at least one semester of BIOL 497 (Independent Study) and have a 3.2 overall GPA.

Deadlines (for both Biological Sciences Department and Graduate School Applications)

  • When applying for admission in fall, the deadline is March 15 of junior year.
  • When applying for admission in spring, the deadline is Oct. 15 of junior year.

What to Submit to Biological Sciences Department (During Applicant's Junior Year)

  • Personal statement (~500 words, include full name, B#, bmail address and which bachelor’s/master’s programs applicant will be combining: BA and MA or MS). The statement could contain applicant's reasons for pursuing graduate study, personal background, academic history, work and internship experience, future plans or other information that may be of special interest and importance in contributing toward an admission decision.
  • Unofficial transcript: Log into BU BRAIN, choose the "Your Records" tab, click "Online Academic Transcript" to print an unofficial transcript. If applicant has an account hold, it will need to be cleared first.
  • Two faculty letters of recommendation (from those with knowledge of applicant's undergraduate-level work).
  • A Statement of Commitment from the Biological Sciences Department faculty member who will be applicant's research advisor. (This individual can also submit a letter of recommendation, if applicable.)

Admission into the Program

Students are provisionally accepted into the program in their junior year. Admission into the program is based on academic performance and sponsorship by a faculty member, who will be the student’s research advisor for the Master of Science degree.

GPA Requirement

After admission into the program, the student must maintain a 3.2 GPA or better in biology courses during the remainder of the bachelor’s degree work.

Register for Graduate-Level Courses as an Undergraduate Student (During Applicant's Senior Year)

Contact the graduate secretary for assistance in registering for eight credits of graduate-level courses. Students take up to eight credits of BIOL 500-600 courses, excluding BIOL 591, 595 and 599. If the objective is an MS degree, candidates should begin their research project and can receive credit by registering for BIOL 597.

Apply to the Graduate School (During Applicant's Senior Year)

  • Formally apply by the semester deadline.
  • The GRE examination will not be required for entrance into the program.
  • There may be a limited number of graduate application fee waivers that applicants may be eligible for (contact the department graduate secretary for information).

Completion of Bachelor's Degree

Complete all requirements for the BA degree as outlined in the Academic Guide (Formerly Bulletin) and apply to graduate.

Admittance into Graduate School

The application is reviewed and a decision rendered.

Conferral of Bachelor's Degree

The undergraduate degree is conferred by the Registrar’s Office. The student can now register as a graduate student.

Register for Graduate-Level Courses (In Student's +1 Year)

As the student is now considered a new/incoming graduate student, the student can register now with all new/incoming students, typically a week prior to classes starting. The student may work with the graduate secretary to be registered earlier once the undergraduate degree has been conferred and the student's record has been switched over to graduate level. The student must complete 30 total credits at the graduate level. Having completed eight credits in their senior year, students may determine how to complete the remaining credits after reviewing progress with their research advisor. Notice however, the graduate school also has a one academic year full-time study requirement (nine credits per semester for two semesters, excluding BIOL 599 credit), which may cut the benefit of credit double counting.

Course Requirements – MS Degree

Candidates must meet the degree requirements as outlined in the Master of Science (thesis) Program section of the Biological Sciences Graduate Student Handbook.

English, General Literature and Rhetoric

4+1 BA-MA in English Program

The 4+1 degree program in English allows some of our most talented undergraduates to pursue their studies in English and creative writing at the graduate level in a timely and cost-efficient manner. It allows qualified students the opportunity to do advanced study in British and American literature, postcolonial and global fiction and film, as well as in creative writing.

Course Sequence and Timetable

For the five-year BA/MA degree, students will take three graduate 500-level courses in LIT/CW, in place of three undergraduate 300-level electives. These three 500-level courses will double-count toward their undergraduate degree and their master's degree. If the student has been accepted into the highly selective honors program, and satisfactorily completes their seminar (fall) and honors thesis (spring), the honors seminar can be counted for one of their graduate courses.

Application and Admission

Students should apply in their junior year by submitting their Declaration of Intent to Apply to the English Department undergraduate administrative assistant. Romance Languages and Literatures

4+1 BA-MA Programs

This 4+1 degree program allows Romance Languages students to complete both an undergraduate degree (BA) and a graduate degree (MA) within five years. In this program, motivated, advanced-standing students begin taking graduate courses in their senior year, substitute these courses for Harpur College electives, and fulfill the requirements for a master of arts in their fifth year of studies. This program offers students a focused undergraduate/graduate curriculum and a well-defined linguistic and cultural education in a shortened period of time. Additionally, applicants to this program are not required to take the GRE exam for graduate admission, avoiding interruptions in their training.

Students in the 4+1 program can pursue an advanced certificate in translation or in community college teaching without adding extra courses or time to their degree completion. Consult the graduate director for further information on this option.

Students should apply to the five-year program during their junior year, after consultation with the department’s graduate director. The application process consists of two steps: first, students apply at the department level, using an application form (it can be found under resources on the department’s website), then, during the fourth/senior year, students apply to the Graduate School, through BU BRAIN. Upon acceptance to the program, students will progress toward completion according to the following requirements: successful conclusion of the BA in year four (including both the General Education and Harpur College requirements for graduation); a B or better grade in graduate coursework; fulfillment of core graduate course requirements; and satisfactory performance in final comprehensive examinations.

Sociology

4+1 BA-MA Program

Exceptional sociology majors have the opportunity to accelerate their education and complete both the BA and MA in five years. This 4+1 degree program is suitable for those students capable of undertaking graduate-level work in their senior year. It offers the benefit of an MA degree, which can be particularly valuable for students planning careers in public service and the nonprofit sector, as well as those who want to strengthen their skills and knowledge in preparation for PhD program applications. Students considering the program should consult the director of graduate studies.

Course Sequence and Timetable

Prior to their senior year, students must complete 96 credits that meet all of the undergraduate requirements for Harpur College, including upper-level writing and General Education courses. During the senior year, the student takes three 500-level  graduate courses. Successful completion and defense of a BA honors thesis (enrolled as SOC 599 with thesis advisor) in the senior year may be substituted for one of these courses. The graduate credits earned in the senior year are doubly counted as undergraduate elective credits and MA credits. After the fourth or senior year, when all undergraduate requirements are met, the student will be awarded a BA degree. After that point, the student enrolls in graduate-level sociology courses at the 500 or 600 level. The student must complete each semester satisfactorily, with none of the undergraduate major courses below a grade of 3.0 and with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 for graduate coursework.

Application and Admissions

Students considering applying should first meet with the director of graduate studies and then apply for the 4+1 degree program no later than the beginning of the second semester of their junior year. Admission decisions for the 4+1 degree program will be made no later than spring of the junior year. Application and admissions processes are through the Sociology Department and subsequently the Graduate School. Applicants are expected to have a strong academic record: normally a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better is required. Students must submit to the department:

  • A completed application form;
  • The names of two professors who may serve as references;
  • An 800-1,000 word maximum personal statement addressing the reasons for pursuing the MA and;
  • A writing sample.

Applicants should forward electronic copies of all documents to the Graduate Director of Sociology.

The applicant will be evaluated based on the quality of the grades, references, personal statement, writing sample and interview. Once approved by the department, the applicant will formally submit an application to the Graduate School.
