Program Overview

Our interdisciplinary German Studies curriculum offers a diverse range of courses in language, literature and culture. The program emphasizes the study of culture in the broadest sense and offers an international approach to education through recognized study abroad programs in Leipzig, Germany and Graz, Austria. Courses on topics from intellectual and cultural history to literary studies to linguistics and visual culture are designed to allow students to follow their passions, develop their intellectual curiosity and pursue their interests with rigor and depth. The program is known for its best practices in language learning and teaching as well as its innovative approaches to student-centered instruction in German Studies.

Our students take advantage of many opportunities available to them while they are at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ and after they graduate. German students at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ have an established record of success at receiving stipends and fellowships that help them advance in their study of the language, or which build on what they learn at Ïã¸ÛÁùºÏ²Ê×ÊÁÏ. Coursework

Some courses to consider in your first year:

• GERM 101 - Elementary German I

  Acquisition of basic grammar and vocabulary, development of reading and speaking skills, introduction to cross-cultural communication. Introduces students to German culture and to cultural interdependencies between German-speaking countries and the U.S. Not for native speakers. Not open to students who have passed the high school German Regents examination within the past three years. 4 credits. Levels: Undergraduate

• GERM 102 - Elementary German II

  Acquisition of basic grammar and vocabulary, development of reading and speaking skills, introduction to cross-cultural communication. Introduces students to German culture and to cultural interdependencies between German-speaking countries and the U.S. Students will not be able to begin the regular elementary German sequence again until the following fall. Not for native speakers. Not open to students who have passed the high school German Regents examination within the past three years. 4 credits. Levels: Undergraduate

• GERM 180B - Topics in German

  Topics in German Studies. Particular themes and problems determined in advance (and reflected in course title when course is offered). May be repeated for credit as topic varies. Prerequisites are determined by instructor. Levels: Undergraduate

• GERM 203 - Intermediate German I

  Continuation of GERM 102. Continued development of language skills introduced in GERM 101 and 102. Emphasis on comprehension (listening and reading) and speech production (speaking and writing). Prerequisites: GERM 102 or one year of high school German or equivalent. Offered regularly. 4 credits. Levels: Undergraduate

After You Graduate

The German studies program offers students the opportunity to develop an individualized curriculum that explores the humanities and social sciences. Coursework can also be tailored to interests in engineering, computer science, management or the natural sciences.

Graduates find employment in fields such as research and teaching, marketing, finance and business, the legal profession, international relations, library science and information management. Students who graduate with this degree also pursue a myriad of graduate degrees including PhD, MBA, JD, MPA and MAT.
